Presidential election in Slovenia 2012
The 2012 presidential election in Slovenia took place on November 11th and December 2nd, 2012. The winner of the election in the second ballot was Borut Pahor ( SD ).
Electoral system
The president was elected by the people in direct and secret ballot for a term of five years. A subsequent re-election was possible once. To be able to participate in the election, a candidate had to be a Slovenian citizen. The election was announced by the President of the State Assembly and had to take place no later than 15 days before the expiry of the previous President's term of office. The candidate who received the absolute majority of the votes was considered elected. Should none of the candidates achieve an absolute majority of the votes, a run-off vote had to take place between the two candidates who received the most votes.
Should the president's regular term of office expire during a state of war or emergency, his office did not end until six months after the state of war or emergency ended.
Candidates
A total of three candidates ran for election. The incumbent incumbent at the time, Danilo Türk , applied for a second term. In addition to Turk, Borut Pahor from the Social Democrats and Milan Zver from the conservative party SDS were running .
Election result
In the first ballot, Borut Pahor was able to get the most votes by a clear margin, but he missed an absolute majority, making a runoff election necessary. Danilo Türk landed in second place and, far behind, in third and last place Milan Zver.
In the second round of voting on December 2, 2012, Borut Pahor won the election by a large margin over Danilo Türk.
