Parliamentary election in Slovenia 2014
The early parliamentary elections in Slovenia in 2014 took place on July 13, 2014. In the election, the 90 members of the State Assembly were newly elected from the approximately 1.7 million eligible voters.
prehistory
The previously ruling Prime Minister Alenka Bratušek of the Positive Slovenia Party (PS) lost the party chairmanship to Zoran Janković in a voting on April 26, 2014 . In the run-up to the vote, Bratušek had already indicated that she would step down from the office of head of government, as in the event of a defeat she would no longer have the support of her own party and would no longer be “on an equal footing” with the coalition partners. As a result of her defeat, Bratušek announced her resignation in writing to President Borut Pahor and Parliament on May 5, 2014, and announced that new parliamentary elections would soon be held. On May 29, President Pahor set the date for the new parliamentary election on July 13. The Constitutional Court confirmed this election date on June 11, thereby dismissing a previously filed lawsuit by several small parties.
Electoral system
The State Assembly in Slovenia is elected using proportional representation. A total of 90 seats are available, two of which are reserved for the Hungarian and Italian minorities. There is a four percent threshold . The legislative period is four years.
