A total of 90 seats

The early parliamentary elections in Slovenia in 2014 took place on July 13, 2014. In the election, the 90 members of the State Assembly were newly elected from the approximately 1.7 million eligible voters.

prehistory

The previously ruling Prime Minister Alenka Bratušek of the Positive Slovenia Party (PS) lost the party chairmanship to Zoran Janković in a voting on April 26, 2014 . In the run-up to the vote, Bratušek had already indicated that she would step down from the office of head of government, as in the event of a defeat she would no longer have the support of her own party and would no longer be “on an equal footing” with the coalition partners. As a result of her defeat, Bratušek announced her resignation in writing to President Borut Pahor and Parliament on May 5, 2014, and announced that new parliamentary elections would soon be held. On May 29, President Pahor set the date for the new parliamentary election on July 13. The Constitutional Court confirmed this election date on June 11, thereby dismissing a previously filed lawsuit by several small parties.

Electoral system

The State Assembly in Slovenia is elected using proportional representation. A total of 90 seats are available, two of which are reserved for the Hungarian and Italian minorities. There is a four percent threshold . The legislative period is four years.

Result

The winner of the election was the SMC center party of law professor Miro Cerar , which was founded only a few weeks before the election and garnered almost 35% of the vote. On the other hand, the strongest party to date, Pozitivna Slovenija , which was again led by Zoran Janković , completely failed the voters and is no longer a member of the new parliament with only 2.2%. The Alenka Bratušek alliance , which was also newly founded , just barely made it into parliament. The left alliance also made it into parliament for the first time with 6%. The largest opposition party, the Slovenian Democratic Party of the former Prime Minister Janez Janša , lost only a relatively moderate amount of votes (–5.5 percentage points) despite the arrest of the top candidate shortly before the elections and again became the second strongest force with 20%. The Social Democrats also lost, with their worst result in Slovenian history since 1990 with just 6% of the vote. In return, the Democratic Pensioners' Party of Slovenia achieved the best result in its history with over 10%. The smaller conservative party New Slovenia made it back into parliament with 5.5%, that of the conservative Slovenian People's Party , which has been represented in parliament since 1990, for the first time with 3.95% and the citizens' list that was only founded in 2011 with 0.9% after only three Years of parliamentary membership.
