Presidential election in Slovenia 1990

The 1990 presidential election in Slovenia took place on April 8-22, 1990. The winner of the election in the second ballot was Milan Kučan ( non-party ). It was the first free direct election of a President of the Republic of Slovenia within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia .

Candidates

A total of four candidates stood for election: Marko Demšar ( LDS ), Jože Pučnik ( DEMOS - SDZS ), Milan Kučan ( SDP ) and Ivan Kramberger .

Election result

In the first ballot, Milan Kučan got the most votes with around 44 percent, but missed an absolute majority, which made a second ballot necessary. Jože Pučnik landed in second place with around 27 percent, making it into the runoff election with Milan Kučan.

In the second round of voting on April 22, 1990, Milan Kučan won the election with a clear lead of around 58 percent over Jože Pučnik.
