Presidential election in Slovenia 2002
The presidential elections in Slovenia in 2002 took place on November 10th and December 1st, 2002. The winner of the second round of voting was Janez Drnovšek ( LDS ).
Electoral system
The president was elected by the people in direct and secret ballot for a term of five years. A subsequent re-election was possible once. To be able to participate in the election, a candidate had to be a Slovenian citizen. The election was announced by the President of the State Assembly and had to take place no later than 15 days before the expiry of the previous President's term of office. The candidate who received the absolute majority of the votes was considered elected. Should none of the candidates achieve an absolute majority of the votes, a run-off vote had to take place between the two candidates who received the most votes.
Should the president's regular term of office expire during a state of war or emergency, his office did not end until six months after the state of war or emergency ended.
