Presidential election in Slovenia 1997

The 1997 presidential election in Slovenia took place on December 23, 1997. The winner of the election was the non-party candidate Milan Kučan .

Electoral system

The president was elected by the people in direct and secret ballot for a term of five years. A subsequent re-election was possible once. To be able to participate in the election, a candidate had to be a Slovenian citizen. The election was announced by the President of the State Assembly and had to take place no later than 15 days before the expiry of the previous President's term of office. Should the president's regular term of office expire during a state of war or emergency, his office did not end until six months after the state of war or emergency ended. The candidate who received the absolute majority of the votes was considered elected.

Candidates

A total of eight candidates ran for election. The previous incumbent Milan Kučan ( non-party ) ran again for a second term. Other candidates were Marjan Poljšak ( NSD ), Jožef Bernik ( SDSS - SKD ), Marjan Cerar ( independent ), Anton Peršak ( DS ), Bogomir Kovač ( LDS ), Janez Podobnik ( SLS ), Marjan Poljšak ( NSD ) and Franc Miklavčič ( KSU ).

Election result

The winner of the election with more than 50 percent of the vote was the previous incumbent Milan Kučan. Since he had thus received an absolute majority of the votes, a second ballot was no longer necessary.
