Zmago Jelinčič Plemeniti (born January 7, 1948 in Maribor ) is a Slovenian politician . He is currently chairman of the far-right Slovene National Party ( Slovene : Slovenska Nacionalna Stranka , SNS ).

Life

Zmago Jelinčič is a qualified pharmacist . In 1991 he was involved in founding the SNS. From 1992 to 2011 he was a member of the Slovenian parliament and temporarily chaired the committees for relations with Cuba and the People's Republic of China .

Jelinčič repeatedly made derogatory comments about foreigners and other ethnic groups, especially Slavic Muslims , Roma and Croats . He wrote the foreword to the book "Hrvati v luči zgodovinske resnice" ("The Croats in the Light of Historical Truth"), which deals critically and polemically with the role of the Croats in World War II .

As a politician, Jelinčič is primarily concerned with the subject of the still open border dispute between Slovenia and Croatia . The border is 501 km long, 6 km of which are in dispute. He had a statue of Tito erected in his garden . Below the statue is the inscription " Josip Broz Tito sin slovenske matere, zmagovalec druge svetovne vojne in maršal Jugoslavije " ( German : " Josip Broz Tito, son of a Slovenian mother, winner in World War II, Marshal of Yugoslavia ").

In the first round of the presidential election on October 21, 2007, Jelinčič reached 4th place with 19.2%. During the election campaign, he compared himself to the French right-wing extremist Jean-Marie Le Pen (who had made it into the runoff of the French presidential election in 2002) and called for a referendum to prevent Croatia from joining the EU.
