The Stranka modernega centra (SMC; German: Party of the Modern Center) is a center- left or center-left party in Slovenia . It was founded on June 2, 2014 under the name Stranka Mira Cerarja (German: Party of Miro Cerar ) . The former chairman and original namesake is the Slovenian legal scholar Miro Cerar. The party was founded on the occasion of the early parliamentary election in July 2014, which was scheduled after the resignation of incumbent Prime Minister Alenka Bratušek .

history

The party, which shortly before the elections was already considered to be the sure election winner of the 2014 parliamentary elections in all forecasts , achieved a landslide victory with almost 35% of the votes and the SMC was by far the strongest force in the State Assembly . It was renamed Stranka modernega centra in March 2015. In the 2018 parliamentary elections , the party fell to 9.7% and, with 10 seats , is only the fourth-largest parliamentary group.

The party has been a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) since November 2014 .

In March 2020, the founder Miro Cerar resigned from the party after his remaining 9 party colleagues who remained in parliament joined a government coalition led by Janez Janša's right-wing conservative Slovene Democratic Party against his will . Cerar accused the SMC of having turned away from its core values by joining the coalition.
