history

Leader Emma Bonino

Più Europa was founded in November 2017 as an electoral alliance for the parliamentary elections in March 2018 . Its components were initially the small liberal parties Radicali Italiani (RI) led by Emma Bonino and Forza Europa (FE) led by Benedetto Della Vedova. The Christian-social and social-liberal party Centro Democratico (CD) under Bruno Tabacci was added as a third partner, and the left Area Progressista as a fourth . The unifying element was the advocacy of the partners for deeper European integration towards a federal Europe as well as the rejection of populism, nationalism and xenophobia. Before the election, the Più Europa list merged with the Partito Democratico (PD), the green socialist list Italia Europa Insieme and Civica Popolare to form a center-left bloc.

In the election, Più Europa received 2.6% of the vote. The list was below the 3 percent hurdle, but thanks to the agreements with the PD, it received two direct mandates (Tabacci, Riccardo Magi) and a representative of the Italians abroad (Alessandro Fusacchia) as well as a senatorial position (Bonino). Since then, the parliamentarians of Piú Europa have each been part of the “mixed group” of non-attached MPs or senators. They were in opposition to the Conte I cabinet from the Five Star Movement and Lega Nord. The Area Progressista left the alliance soon after the election.

On January 27, 2019, Più Europa held its founding congress, at which it transformed from an electoral alliance into a political party. The predecessor parties did not dissolve, however, but continued to exist as associated parties within Più Europa . Benedetto Della Vedova was elected chairman by 55.7% of the members ( Marco Cappato came second with 30%). In February 2019, Più Europa was accepted into the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE).

For the European elections in May 2019 , the Piú Europa list also included candidates from the green-progressive small party Italia in Comune , PDE Italia, the South Tyrolean Team Köllensperger , PRI and PSI . The list received 3.1% of the vote and remained below the four percent hurdle. After the coalition of the Northern League and the Five Star Movement broke up, there was an internal dispute as to whether the party should support the Conte II cabinet, which is made up of the Five Star Movement and the PD. The majority of Più Europa rejected this, but the Centro Democratico opted for it and therefore left the party again.
