Iniciativa Liberal

The Iniciativa Liberal (IL), in German Liberal Initiative , is a small Portuguese liberal party. The party, founded in 2017, competed for the first time in the 2019 European elections and won a mandate in the Assembleia da República for the first time in the Portuguese parliamentary election in 2019 .

Political development

Her political path began with the founding of the Associação Iniciativa Liberal on September 20, 2016. On the basis of her programmatic “Manifesto Portugal Mais Liberal” (Manifesto Portugal Mais Liberal), the entire year 2017 was used to recruit members and to develop structures for the new party initiative. The founding party congress took place in Porto on November 26, 2017 and was recognized as a political party by the Portuguese Constitutional Court on December 13, 2017.

At the 1st party congress of the IL in Lisbon on May 5, 2018, their program “Menos Estado, Mais Liberdade” (“Less State, More Freedom”) was adopted and Miguel Ferreira da Silva was elected President of the new party. At the 2nd party congress in Montemor-o-Velho on October 13, 2018, it was decided to take part in the 2019 European elections (May 26), the regional elections in Madeira (September 22) and the Portuguese parliamentary elections (October 6). Carlos Guimarães Pinto was elected as the new President of the IL.

Since December 1, 2017, the IL has been a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE).

In the parliamentary elections in October 2019, the Iniciativa Liberal won a mandate for the first time; the entrepreneur João Cotrim de Figueiredo joined the party.
