history

A meeting was held in June 2014 to prepare for the founding of a new party, but the official founding act did not take place until May 24, 2016. With the former Independence Party Vice Chairman þorgerður katrín gunnarsdóttir and former Prime Minister Þorsteinn Pálsson have prominent exponent of the liberal-conservative Independence Party switched to Viðreisn and the party has been described in the media as a splinter group of the Independence Party, which perception of party president Benedikt Jóhannesson , however, at the founding was rejected. The motivation for the creation of Viðreisn is the withdrawal of the application for Iceland to join the European Union , which the Icelandic government announced in 2013 and implemented in March 2015 without having held a referendum as previously promised.

Since neither the governing coalition of the Independence Party and the Progressive Party nor the center-left alliance of the four opposition parties, the Left-Green Movement , Píratar , Björt framtíð and Allianz , was able to achieve a government majority in the parliamentary elections on October 29, 2016 , Viðreisn was considered to win seven seats could, as a possible tip on the scales or "kingmaker". Since January 11, 2017 she was involved in a coalition government made up of the Independence Party, Viðreisn and Björt framtíð. The Bjarni Benediktsson cabinet (2017) consisted of three representatives from Viðreisn: Benedikt Jóhannesson (finance), Þorsteinn Víglundsson (social affairs and equality) and Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir (fisheries and agriculture). On October 11, 2017, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir replaced the previous party chairman Benedikt Jóhannesson .

In the early parliamentary election on October 28, 2017 , the party received 6.69% of the vote and thus four seats in the Althing.

program

In its party program, the party advocates social justice, responsible use of natural resources and cooperation with the western world . She calls for an immediate referendum on the resumption of accession negotiations with the EU . Thereafter, if the negotiations are successful, the accession will be voted on again. Viðreisn also calls for the reform of the Icelandic constitution to be completed, thereby giving the population instruments of direct democracy . The government must meet its information obligations.
