Party letter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A party letter ( Danish partibogstav ) or list letter (listebogstav) , officially "letter designation" (bogstavbetegnelse) is a letter that represents a political party in Denmark (including the Faroe Islands ) and in Iceland in elections.

Denmark

The party letters are known in Denmark from election advertising and ballot papers. They do not necessarily correspond to the party abbreviation. For example, the cut Danish Social Democrats with S , but her party in elections Letter is A .

An old Danish joke is about the likelihood of confusion:

And you thought of voting for the Conservatives, darling?
Yes of course, I made my cross at K!

Although Det Conservative Folkeparti is often abbreviated with K, this was the party letter of the Danmarks Kommunistiske Parti (DKP, 1945–1988).

The party letters were first introduced in 1901 in the Landsting elections and used again in the 1908 local elections. Common nationwide letters for each party were introduced with the 1936 local elections and the 1943 Folketing elections . The order of the national letters was based on the size of the parliamentary groups in the Copenhagen citizenship .

The letters will be retained in the Folketing and European elections . Even if a party does not take part in an election, it keeps its letter.

The system of party letters in Denmark facilitates clarity, especially since there are no uniform party letters as in other countries.
