Sambandsflokkurin , or Samband for short ( Faroese for contact, solidarity, union), is a liberal and pro- Danish party in the Faroe Islands . The German name is Unionisten .
history
The Sambandsflokkurin is the oldest Faroese party. Its foundation was announced on August 18, 1906 in the weekly newspaper Dimmalætting . Dimmalætting was to remain the official party organ until the 1990s . Propst Fríðrikur Petersen was elected first chairman .
The main concern of Samband, to maintain the constitutional connection with Denmark, attracted liberals and conservatives alike. Thus Samband initially achieved an absolute majority of Faroese voters, while the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin , which was founded only a short time later and aimed at Faroese autonomy, remained in the minority. A balance of forces was established between the First and Second World Wars . Later, a stable multi-party system with the coordinate cross left-right / unionist-separatist developed. Samband's share of the vote has been between 19 and 29 percent since 1945.
In the referendum on September 14, 1946 , Samband recommended that the separation from Denmark be rejected. The unclear result provoked a constitutional crisis, which could only be ended by the Statute of Autonomy of 1948 . Since then, the unionists have been in government for a total of 35 years, and they have been the prime minister ( Løgmaður ) for more than 20 years .
In the Løgtings election 2011, the party came through votes to eight seats in the Løgting . However, in 2015 she lost two seats and had to join the opposition. The former party chairman Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen was head of government from 2008 to 2015 and chairman of Sambandsflokkurin from 2004 to 2015. On October 24, 2015, Bárður á Steig Nielsen was elected as his successor as the 10th chairman since foundation. His deputy was Magni Laksáfoss .
