Sjálvstýri (German: self-administration ) is a social liberal party of the Faroe Islands , which was called Sjálvstýrisflokkurin ( self-administration party ) from 1909 to June 2015 . In the past, the party had campaigned for extensive self-government in the Faroe Islands.

In the parliamentary elections in September 2015, she received 4.0 percent of the vote and received two seats in the Løgting .

history

Matras, Niclas Niclasen , Edward Mitens and Nyholm Debess , in the middle row Kristian L. Kristiansen and Jóannes Patursson, and in the bottom row Johan Hendrik Poulsen , Johan Kallsoy, Símun Petur Zacharissen and Gunnar Winther.

The party was founded in 1909, making it one of the oldest parties in the Faroe Islands. Although the party already existed informally in 1906, when the Sambandsflokkurin stood for the Løgtings election, it was not until 1909 that it was constituted as the second party in the Faroe Islands. The first chairman was Jóannes Patursson .

In contrast to the unionist party Sambandsflokkurin, Sjálvstyri advocated the autonomy of the Faroe Islands from Denmark . So it united the nationalist forces that had already united at the Christmas meeting of the Faroe Islands in 1888 . Initially, the self-government party was in the minority, but was able to provide a majority of the MPs for the first time in 1918. In the Løgtingswahl in 1936 it was the largest party, but the upcoming land reform in the Faroe Islands led to a dispute that led to a vote for the chairmanship between the previous chairman Jóannes Patursson and his challenger Edward Mitens . Mitens won the vote and remained chairman of the Sjalvstyrisflokkurin until 1939. Patursson, however, was extremely dissatisfied with the development and left his party after a while. In 1939, Jóannes Patursson, along with other dissatisfied people and Thorstein Petersens Vinnuflokkurin, founded a new party, the Fólkaflokkurin , which took a radical line in terms of self-government. Complete separation from Denmark was the goal of this party. The situation had changed completely due to the war and the occupation and the Fólkaflokkurin was able to distinguish itself at the expense of the Sjalvstyrisflokkurin. After the Løgting election in 1943 , she was no longer represented in parliament at all. Sjálvstyri lost so much weight during the war and has never recovered from it. Only after the Løgtingswahl in 1946 was the party again represented in parliament with two members, the brothers Símun Petur Zachariasen and Louis Zachariasen .

Since the Second World War , the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin has always remained below the 10% mark. As a party in the middle of the political spectrum, Sjálvstyri was able to tip the scales despite its low number of seats . The party was often involved in government coalitions. In the Faroese political coordinate system, the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin tends to be left in the center, and today she also takes a very moderate position on the question of the independence of the Faroe Islands, especially since her demands have been largely met with the recognition of the Faroese language and the Faroese Law on Autonomy . Fólkaflokkurin (conservative) and Tjóðveldi (socialist) strive for independence from Denmark today .

present

The party chairman was from November 2011 to April 2015 Kári P. Højgaard , who should also represent his party in Løgting. However, since he was a member of the Faroese state government as Minister of the Interior from November 2011 to September 2013, he was not allowed to vote in Løgting. During this time he was represented by Jógvan Skorheim and Kristianna Winther Poulsen.

Kári P. Højgaard was replaced as party leader on April 9, 2015 by Klaksvík mayor Jógvan Skorheim. However, Højgaard has become deputy party chairman.

In June 2015, the new party leader Jógvan Skorheim announced that the name Sjálvstýrisflokkurin would be given up and that the party would instead run under the name "Nýtt Sjálvstýri" (German: New Self- Administration). The image of the party had in recent years by the involvement of Kári P. Højgaard in the scandal surrounding the East Island - Tunnel ( Eysturoyartunnilin suffered) something.

In the Løgtings election on September 1, 2015, Nýtt Sjálvstýri won 1,301 votes and thus achieved 4.0 percent of all votes. Jógvan Skorheim got 386 personal votes and Kári P. Højgaard 351 personal votes. This means that Nýtt Sjálvstýri will be represented by two MPs in the next Løgting. In the 2011 parliamentary elections, the party received 4.2 percent of the vote, but only received one of the 33 Løgting seats.

However, since the majority of the Klaksvík City Council was against a dual mandate for mayor and Løgting deputy, Jógvan Skorheim decided to become mayor of Klaksvík. As a successor, Bárður Kass Nielsen is next to Kári P. Højgaard, the second Løgting member of Nýtt Sjálvstýri.
