Løgtingswahl 1943

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1943 Løgtingswahl in the Faroe Islands took place on August 24th of that year. It is therefore also called Bartalsmessuvalið . It was the only election that took place under the British occupation during World War II .

The vote

The election was a real triumph for the Fólkaflokkurin , who gained over 16 percent of the vote and doubled his seats from six to 12. Fólkaflokkurin had now become the largest party in parliament with over 40 percent.

The big loser in this election was again Sjálvstýrisflokkurin , whose share of the vote had collapsed again and was now 10 percent. Even more devastating, however, was that due to a change in the electoral law, conditions had to be met for entry into parliament that the party could not fully meet. Therefore, despite having a 10 percent share of the vote, she did not get a seat in Løgting. It was an unprecedented decline, because the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin was the second largest party in Løgting with 7 members until the 1940 election.

However, the other two major parties also suffered slight losses. Sambandsflokkurin and Javnaðarflokkurin had a combined total of 13 MPs and thus the block, which was oriented towards Denmark, still had a narrow majority in parliament despite the great success of Fólkaflokkurin in the elections.
