Javnaðarflokkurin [ ˈjaunɛaːrˌflɔkːʊrin ] is the Faroe Islands' Social Democratic Party . The election list abbreviation is C.
Surname
The name of the party is made up of javnaður (equality) and flokkur (party). Javnaðarflokkurin is the Faroese name for every social democratic party, for example the SPD is called Tyski Javnaðarflokkurin in Faroese .
history
The forerunner of Javnaðarflokkurin was founded on September 25, 1925 as Suðurstreymoyar Javnaðarfelag (Social Democratic Association of South Streymoy ) and essentially emerged from the Socialist Youth Association and the Tórshavner Workers' Association (Faroese Havnar Arbeiðsmannafelag ), in whose office on the Tinganes peninsula M. Viðstein was elected first chairman that day.
A few months later the Froðbiar Sóknar Javnaðarfelag for the south island Suðuroy was founded in Tvøroyri . One of his spokesmen was the later long-time party leader and Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, Petur Mohr Dam .
Both associations merged in 1926 to form the Føroya Javnaðarflokkur (Social Democratic Party of the Faroe Islands). Its program was strongly oriented towards the reform-oriented social democracy of Northern Europe, plus eleven Faroe-specific demands.
On January 23, 1928, the Social Democrats ran for the first time in the Løgtings elections and achieved with 671 votes nationwide 10.6 percentage points and thus two Løgting seats. The first two MPs were Viðstein and Petur Mohr Dam. Eight years later, in the 1936 elections , the Løgtings seats could be tripled to six, half of which came from Suðuroy . During this period there was an ideological dispute between Viðstein, who was oriented towards the 3rd International , and Dam, who leaned towards the reform-oriented Scandinavian social democracy.
In the same year Viðstein left the party and withdrew completely from politics. Petur Mohr Dam took over the chairmanship of the party, which he held until his death on November 8, 1968.
The Javnaðarflokkur played a key role in drafting the Faroese Autonomy Act of 1948 and was also involved in the first state government of the Faroe Islands until 1950. After eight years of opposition, the Javnaðarflokkur won an election in 1958. It became the strongest party, received eight Løgting seats and provided the Løgmaður with Petur Mohr Dam for the next five years . After that, the Social Democrats were involved in most governments, most recently from 1996 to 2011.
In common parlance, the Føroya Javnaðarflokkur has been called Javnaðarflokkurin for a long time . In 2010 the party officially adopted this name.

In the Løgtingswahl at the end of October 2011 Javnaðarflokkurin received a total of 5,417 votes, which corresponds to a share of the vote of 17.7 percent. The Social Democrats received six of the 33 seats in Løgting .
- Gerhard Lognberg (until November 2013)
- Eyðgunn Jana Samuelsen
- Aksel V. Johannesen
- Kristin Michelsen
- Rigmor Dam
- Henrik Old
In the 2011 Folketing election , the party won a seat in the Danish Folketing Parliament . However, it was not the official top candidate Aksel V. Johannesen that was elected, but the journalist and actor Sjúrður Skaale . He had only converted from the Tjóðveldi to the Social Democrats in the 2011 election year . Before that, he was a successor in the Folketing for Høgni Hoydal from February 2007 to September 2008 . Hoydal achieved the best personal election result in 2011, but his party was narrowly beaten by the Social Democrats.
At the beginning of November 2013 Gerhard Lognberg was expelled from the Javnaðarflokkurin. Kristin Michelsen then stated that many voters had expressed their dissatisfaction with being kicked out and that he himself was playing with the idea of leaving the party. However, he then remained a member. For the remainder of the legislative period, the group consisted of only five members.
2015 -
In the Løgtings election at the beginning of September 2015, Javnaðarflokkurin won a record 8,074 votes, which corresponds to a share of 25.1 percent of the votes. The Social Democrats were able to occupy eight of the 33 seats in Løgting . The following candidates won a seat (listed by personal votes):
- Aksel V. Johannesen
- Sonja Jógvansdóttir (independent MP since September 15, 2015)
- Eyðgunn Samuelsen
- Rigmor Dam
- Heðin Mortensen
- Henrik Old
- Kristin Michelsen
- Bjarni Hammer
Since Aksel V. Johannesen, Eyðgunn Samuelsen, Rigmor Dam and Henrik Old belong to the new state government and are therefore not entitled to vote in the Løgting, four successors were named by the party at the opening meeting of the Løgting on September 15, who will take up the four seats that have become vacant:
Late in the evening of September 15, 2015, the first day of work for the new coalition government, Sonja Jógvansdóttir told the party leadership that she was leaving the party and thus also leaving the parliamentary group. However, she intends to continue to support the coalition government as an independent MP. As a reason for her resignation, she cited her dissatisfaction with the fact that the change in the law on civil marriage of same-sex people was not explicitly mentioned in the coalition agreement and that a vocal minority within the social democratic faction had succeeded in pushing this change in the law off the agenda. Since she had worked towards this change in the law all her political life, she could no longer be a member of this party.
Aksel V. Johannesen, party leader and prime minister, expressed his regret at Sonja Jógvansdóttir's move, but pointed out that the coalition strength of 17 MPs will not change, as Sonja has promised that she will continue to support the coalition as independent MPs will.
