The Atassut ( Greenlandic for “common sense” or “togetherness”) is a political party in Greenland .

history

When political groups emerged in Greenland in the mid-1970s, Atassut was founded between 1976 and 1977 as a liberal and conservative counterweight to Siumut . At first it was just a political movement. In 1977 the Atassut was manifested in Nuuk under Daniel Skifte , but it was not until April 29, 1978 that it was founded as a nationwide party. In 1981 there were already 59 local groups with a total of around 3000 members.

While the Siumut had independence from Denmark in mind as a long-term goal , the Atassut advocated maintaining the Rigsfællesskabet . In the first few years the party was tied with the Siumut in elections. In some cases it even got the most votes. Since there were only a few parties in Greenland at that time, the left-wing Inuit Ataqatigiit always decided on the power of government that it gave to the social democratic Siumut. To date, the Atassut has never been the head of government despite its initial dominance.

From the 1990s, the election results deteriorated consistently in favor of the Inuit Ataqatigiit , but also because of the emergence of the more right-wing Kattusseqatigiit Partiiat and Demokraatit . Since 1995 the party has deteriorated in every election, so that it is now only the fifth strongest party in elections.

Political orientation

In addition to its commitment to maintaining the union with Denmark, Atassut represents conservative and liberal positions. The party advocates privatization and tax cuts. She supports Greenland's international connections and sees Greenland's exit from the European Union as an economic disadvantage for the country. She advocates membership of Greenland via Denmark in NATO and thus also the military presence of the USA at Thule Air Base .
