The parliamentary election in Greenland 2018 ( Danish Landstingsvalget i Grønland 2018 ) was the 13th election of Inatsisartut . It had to take place no later than four years after the 2014 election , i.e. by November 27, 2018. On March 13, 2018, Parliament set the date on April 24 at the suggestion of Prime Minister Kim Kielsen .

Siumut won the election despite considerable losses in front of the also significantly weakened Inuit Ataqatigiit . The clearest election winners were the Demokraatit . The newly founded parties Suleqatigiissitsisut and Nunatta Qitornai also benefited from the losses of the two strongest parties in the country and were each able to win a seat in the Inatsisartut.

Suffrage

The 31 members of the Inatsisartut are elected in multiple constituencies using proportional representation . In the allocation of seats, only parties or lists that overcome an explicit blocking clause amounting to 2% of the valid votes cast are taken into account . The seat assignment is done according to the D'Hondt method .

Starting position

Kim Kielsen, Acting Prime Minister

After several cabinet reshuffles in the past legislative period , the social democratic party Siumut led a center-left coalition government with the socialist party Inuit Ataqatigiit and the centrist Partii Naleraq . The three parties had a comfortable two-thirds majority in the Inatsisartut . In addition to the Prime Minister, Siumut had four ministers in the government ( Naalakkersuisut ). Inuit Ataqatigiit also had four ministerial posts, while the Partii Naleraq sent a cabinet member with ex-head of government Hans Enoksen.

Participating parties

The following parties competed:

Political party Abbreviation German meaning Alignment Camp before the election
Siumut S. Forward social democratic government
Inuit Ataqatigiit IA Inuit community democratic-socialist
Partii Naleraq PN Party of the bearing mark centrist , interest party
Atassut A. Common sense right-wing liberal parliamentary opposition
Democracy D. Democrats social liberal to conservative
Nunatta Qitornai NQ Children of our country regionalist extra-parliamentary opposition
Suleqatigiissitsisut Su Party of cooperation socially to economically liberal

The Nunatta Qitornai and the Suleqatigiissitsisut were only founded by Vittus Qujaukitsoq and Michael Rosing and Tillie Martinussen at the end of 2017 and the beginning of 2018, respectively , and thus competed for the first time. On March 12th and 13th, they gave the signatures that are needed to take office.

The separatist Partii Inuit disbanded after the 2014 election, in which they fell from the government directly below the hurdle that would have meant one seat. The former party members stood for the Partii Naleraq, which was also striving for the independence of Greenland.
