In the parliamentary elections in Greenland in 1983 on April 12th, 26 seats in the Inatsisartut or Landsting, the Greenland parliament, were to be filled. Previously the parliament consisted of only 21 members.

Suffrage

In this parliamentary election, proportional representation was used for the first time in Greenland, which is why the Inuit Ataqatigiit also managed to enter the Inatsisartut.

Starting position

Due to the majority voting right, the Siumut had an absolute majority in the Inatsisartut in the previous legislative period . The Motzfeldt I cabinet consisted of Prime Minister Jonathan Motzfeldt and four other ministers.

Result

The right-wing liberal party Atassut and the social democratic Siumut became the strongest faction in Inatsisartut, followed by the Inuit Ataqatigiit , which entered parliament for the first time.

consequences

Jonathan Motzfeldt (Siumut) was confirmed in office as Prime Minister. The Motzfeldt II cabinet began its work on May 3, 1983 and consisted of six members, all of whom belonged to the Siumut. However, the government was supported by a coalition of Siumut and Inuit Ataqatigiit, which had an absolute majority in parliament.
