In the parliamentary elections in Greenland in 1999 on February 16, all 31 seats in the Inatsisartut or Landsting, the Greenland parliament , had to be filled.

Starting position

In 1995, as a result of the parliamentary election, the Johansen II cabinet was formed under the leadership of the Siumut . When Prime Minister Lars-Emil Johansen was replaced by his party colleague and predecessor Jonathan Motzfeldt on September 19, 1997 , the Motzfeldt VI cabinet was formed , which held office until the end of the legislative period .

Result

The social democratic party Siumut was again the strongest faction in the Inatsisartut, followed by the Atassut and the Inuit Ataqatigiit . The center party Akulliit Partiiat did not run again. The conservative Kattusseqatigiit Partiiat moved into parliament for the first time and won four seats straight away.

consequences

Jonathan Motzfeldt (Siumut) was confirmed as Prime Minister by parliament and formed the Motzfeldt VII cabinet after taking over the office in 1997 from his party colleague Lars-Emil Johansen . Motzfeldt was Greenland’s Prime Minister from 1979 to 1991.
