description

Appearance and leaf

Eucalyptus caleyi grows as a tree that can reach heights of up to 25 meters. The bark remains on the entire tree, is gray-black and rough. The bark of the small branches is green. There are oil glands in the marrow of the young branches, but not in the bark.

In Eucalyptus caleyi , heterophyllia is present. The leaves are always divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. On young specimens, the leaf blade is egg-shaped to circular and blue-green floured or frosted. On medium-old specimens, it is about 6 cm long and about 5 cm wide and is also egg-shaped to circular, straight, with entire margins and blue-green floured or frosted. The blue-green floured or frosted leaves on adult specimens with the same colored upper and lower sides are lanceolate to ovoid with a length of 5 to 10 cm and a width of 1.5 to 4.0 cm, relatively thick, straight, tapering towards the base of the blades and have a blunt or rounded top. Your petiole is narrowly flattened or channel-shaped with a length of 14 to 23 mm. The side nerves, which are barely visible, extend from the middle nerve at an acute angle at medium distances. The cotyledons ( cotyledons ) are upside-kidney-shaped.

Inflorescence and flower

Terminally or laterally on an inflorescence stem with a length of 12 to 20 mm in cross section with a round or narrow-edged inflorescence stem, there are approximately seven-flowered partial inflorescences in compound total inflorescences . The pedicel-round flower stalks are 4 to 10 mm long. The blue-green floured or frosted flower buds are 6 to 9 mm in length and 4 to 5 mm in diameter and are egg, club-shaped, short spindle-shaped or square. The sepals form a calyptra that falls off early. The smooth calyptra is conical, shorter than or as long as the smooth flower cup (hypanthium) and narrower than this. The flowers are white or creamy white. The outer stamens are sterile (sterile).

fruit

With a length of 6 to 10 mm and a diameter of 5 to 7 mm, the stalked fruit is pear- to egg-shaped or square and three- to four-sided. The disc is indented, the fruit compartments are included.

Occurrence

The natural range of Eucalyptus caleyi is the northern table country of New South Wales and the Great Dividing Range in southeast Queensland .

Eucalyptus caleyi grows widespread and locally often in grassy, sparse forest on drier, flat, average nutrient-rich soils .

Systematics

The first description of eucalyptus caleyi was made in 1906 by Joseph Maiden in The Forest Flora of New South Wales , Volume 2, page 205. The type material has the label " New South Wales, Howell, JH Maiden & JL Boorman, Aug. 1905 (holo NSW , iso G, K, L) “.

Of eucalyptus caleyi Maiden There are two subspecies:

  • Eucalyptus caleyi Maiden subsp. caleyi , Syn . : Eucalyptus coerulea RTBaker, Eucalyptus leucoxylon var. pallens (Benth.) Rehder, Eucalyptus sideroxylon var. pallens Benth .: The flower buds and fruits are not square.
  • Eucalyptus caleyi subsp. ovendenii LASJohnson & KDHill: The flower buds and fruits are square.

Natural hybrids were made between Eucalyptus caleyi subsp. caleyi and Eucalyptus albens , Eucalyptus crebra , Eucalyptus dealbata , Eucalyptus melliodora, and Eucalyptus microcarpa were found.
