Chornobaj ( Ukrainian Чорнобай ; Russian Чернобай Chernobai ) is an urban-type settlement in the northeast of Cherkassy Oblast in Ukraine with about 7,300 inhabitants (2016).

geography

Chornobaj is located 50 km northeast of Cherkassy on the Irklij River ( Ірклій ), a 39 km long, left tributary of the Dnieper . The nearest train station is in the city of Zolotonosha, 22 km west of the village. In addition to Chornobaj, the village of Savkivka (Ukrainian Савківка ) with about 330 inhabitants belongs to the settlement council .

history

The settlement was founded by Cossacks in the middle of the 17th century. The place was first mentioned in 1656 and in 1923 it became the center of the Rajon. Chornobaj was occupied by Wehrmacht troops from September 19, 1941 to September 27, 1943 . On April 23, 1965, Chornobaj received urban-type settlement status.

Tschornobaj is the administrative seat of the Rajons of the same name, founded in 1923. In its south it forms a peninsula in the Dnepr, which is dammed up to form the Kremenchuk reservoir . The Chornobaj district has almost 50,000 inhabitants and an area of ​​1554 km². The population density is 32 inhabitants per km².
