Shpola ( Ukrainian and Russian Шпола ) is a city with 17,500 inhabitants (2014) in the center of Ukraine . It is located on the Shpolka (Ukrainian Шполка ), a 53 km long tributary of the Hnylyj Tikytsch in the Cherkasy Oblast 69 kilometers southwest of the Oblast capital Cherkassy .

The village is the geographical center of today's Ukraine. It was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1594 and was granted city status in 1938. The large Jewish majority in the village was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War .
