Oleksiy Kolomychenko
Oleksiy Sydorowytsch Kolomijtschenko ( Ukrainian Олексій Сидорович Коломійченко , Russian Алексей Сидорович Коломийченко Alexei Sidorovitch Kolomijtschenko ; born March 18, jul. / The thirtieth March 1898 greg. In Shpola , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 17th September 1974 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian otorhinolaryngologist and university professor.
Life
Oleksij Kolomijtschenko was born in Shpola in what is now the Ukrainian Cherkassy Oblast as the younger brother of the future surgeon Mychajlo Kolomijtschenko ( Олексій Михайло Коломійченко ; 1892–1973). There he attended school and graduated from the First Ukrainian Gymnasium .
In 1919 he began studying at the law faculty of the University of Kiev , but after a month he moved to the medical faculty of the same university, today's National Medical University named after OO Bohomolets . After completing his studies, he stayed for a short time at the surgical department of the institute and then switched to the Isjaslav District Hospital in what was then Okrug Shepetivka as an internal trainer . From 1928 he was employed at the Kiev Institute for Advanced Doctors and between 1944 and 1966 he headed the Department of Otolaryngology of the Institute for Advanced Medical Education On June 7, 1960, on his initiative, the Institute for ENT Medicine, which is now named after him, was founded in Kiev whose first director he became and where he worked until the end of his life.
Kolomychenko made a significant contribution to the development of the tonsil problem, to the diagnosis and treatment of hearing impairments, inflammatory processes of the middle ear and intracranial complications. Kolomychenko trained 16 doctors and 40 candidates in medical sciences and wrote 200 scientific papers, including eight monographs. Even though he held a high position in the Soviet Union, he refused all his life to join the Communist Party. He died in Kiev at the age of 76 and was buried there in the Baikowe cemetery .
Honors and memberships
Oleksij Kolomychenko received numerous honors. Including:
- Lenin Prize (1964) for the development and implementation of hearing aids for secondary surgery in otosclerosis
- 2 × the Order of the Red Banner of Labor
- Since 1967 corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine
- The institute for ENT medicine bears his name and contains a museum about his life and work
- In 1976 the district hospital in his hometown was named after him and his brother Mychajlo and a memorial was erected in their honor.
- On December 5, 2018, the National Bank of Ukraine issued a 2- hryvnia silver coin in his memory .
