The Encyclopedia of the History of Ukraine ( Ukrainian Енциклопедія історії України / Encyklopedija Istoriï Ukraïny ) is a ten-volume scientific reference work on the history of Ukraine .

After the Ukraine became independent, the history sciences in particular experienced an upswing. In the course of this, the Institute for History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine planned an encyclopedia of the history of Ukraine freed from the old Soviet ideologues and perspectives. Under the direction of the historian and academician Valery Smolij , ten volumes of a new encyclopedia of the history of Ukraine with an edition of 5000 copies were published by the state publishing house Naukowa Dumka from 2003 to 2013 , which replaced the earlier four-volume Soviet encyclopedia of the history of Ukraine from 1969 to 1972.

The volumes between 500 and 950 pages in length, to which 864 historians from all over Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Lithuania and Canada have contributed, contain around 11,000 articles, which are provided with numerous references and black-and-white illustrations as well as maps .

Two supplementary volumes Ukraine - Ukrainians are being planned , which will be devoted to Ukraine in general and to the most recent events in contemporary history, Euromaidan , the annexation of Crimea by Russia and the war in Ukraine since 2014 . The first volume was published in December 2018.

The encyclopedia can be researched online on the website of the Institute for History, and the ten volumes are also available as complete PDF documents.
