Oleksandr Bohomolets
Oleksandr Oleksandrowytsch Bohomolez ( Ukrainian Олександр Олександрович Богомолець , Russ. Александр Александрович Богомолец , born May 12, jul. / 24. May 1881 greg. In Kiev , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 19th July 1946 in Kiev, Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian pathophysiologist and the founder of pathophysiological science in Ukraine . He dedicated his scientific work to geronto- , onco- , immuno-, allergo-, endocrino- and hematology .
Bohomolez was President of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR , a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Belarusian SSR and, among other things, the developer of Anti-Reticular Cytotoxic Serum and author of numerous works, for example on endocrinology and metabolic disorders.
biography
Bohomolez was born in Lukjanivska prison in Kiev after his mother Sofija Bohomolez was imprisoned there for political activity shortly before his birth. In 1906 he received his doctorate with distinction from the Novorossiysk University Faculty of Medicine . In 1910 he was assistant professor at the chair of pathological physiology at the University of Odessa . In 1911 he received further training at the Sorbonne in Paris, and from 1911 to 1925 he was Professor of General Pathology and Bacteriology at the University of Saratov . Between 1925 and 1929 Bohomolez headed the Experimental Pathology Department at the Communist Academy in Moscow . From 1930 to 1946 he was director of the Institute of Experimental Biology and Pathology in Kiev and from 1934 to 1946 director of the Institute of Clinical Physiology of the USSR in Kiev.

Oleksandr Bohomolets was the son of, the Chernihiv branch of a Lithuanian-Ruthenian aristocratic family, doctor and revolutionary populist Alexander Mikhailovich Bogomolets ( Александр Михайлович Богомолец Богомолец ; the left-wing, Ukrainian-Bohomolets; ( Софія Миколаївна Богомолець ; 1856-1892). Oleksandr's wife was the pediatric neuropathologist Olha Bohomolez ( Ольга Георгіївна Богомолець ; 1891-1956). Their son Oleh Bohomolez ( Олег Олександрович Богомолець ; 1911–1991) was a Ukrainian pathophysiologist and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR. His daughter, was the professor of pathological anatomy at the National Medical University Kateryna Bohomolez ( Катерина Олегівна Богомолець ; 1939-2013), who in turn was the mother of the doctor and Ukrainian politician Olha Bohomolez (* 1966).
Honors
Bohomolez received the Order of Lenin in 1940 , the Order of the Red Labor Banner and the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class in 1944 . Furthermore, he was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1941 , in 1943 he was named an Honored Scientist of the USSR and in 1944 a Hero of Socialist Labor . In 1971 a Soviet postage stamp with his likeness was issued. The National Medical University of Ukraine in Kiev and several streets in Ukraine are named after him.
