Isjaslav ( Ukrainian Ізяслав ; Russian Изяслав , Polish Zasław ) is a city in the Khmelnytskyi Oblast of Ukraine with 18,444 inhabitants (2001). It is located on the Horyn River and its tributaries Ponora and Soscha , about 100 kilometers north of the Oblast capital Khmelnytskyi . Other non-official spellings for the place are Saslav / Заслав and Scheslaw / Жеслав.
history
Alt-Isjaslav as the oldest part of the city lies on the left high bank of the Horyn and was first mentioned in 1386. New Isjaslav on the other side of the river was first mentioned in 1589. The district, in turn, is determined by the Ponora in the north to Seredmistia and southern Maydan divided.
During the Khmelnytskyi Uprising , Isyaslav was devastated twice in 1648 and 1650. In 1685 the place was burned down by the Tatars .
