The New Town Synagogue in Isjaslav in the Ukrainian Oblast of Khmelnytskyi was probably built in 1834 and is now home to an evening school.

history

The year of construction cannot be determined with certainty. It was mentioned in 1834, but it is not entirely clear whether the current building was built earlier or later on in place of an earlier synagogue.

During World War II the building was damaged and then by the Soviet radically restructured authorities. Neither devices inside nor decorative elements were preserved. Wooden extensions on the north side were demolished, the roof changed and a large inclined support pillar added in the southwest.

Inside, the original structure of the main room and vestibule as well as the windowing in the west and south (in contrast to the other sides) have largely been preserved.

The synagogue is now used as an evening school; the building is in good condition.

architecture

Only a few photos from 1913 and 1926 and a painting from around 1913 are known of the appearance of the synagogue. The main hall and vestibule were built as an integral part; on the north side there was a two-story wooden extension, probably with the stairs to the women's rooms. The (western) vestibule was also two-story and had rectangular windows and the entrance door for the men. The high main hall in the eastern part had high arched windows.

The gable roof was closed off to the west with an ornate gable which contained a round window and was divided into three parts by pilasters . After the war, the roof was replaced by a hip roof made of sheet metal.

The hall inside had a barrel vault made of wood; Nothing is known about the Torah shrine . The octagonal bima in the middle of the hall had a parapet made of plastered bricks. The stairs from the south and north to the podium had a wooden banister ( balustrade ).
