Paolo Fontana (1743)

Paolo Antonio Domenico Fontana (born October 28, 1696 in Castello (Valsolda) , † March 17, 1765 in Isjaslaw ) was an Italian architect . He was one of the leading representatives of baroque architecture in Ukraine .

Life

Paolo Fontana was born in Castello, the son of Giacomo Fontana and Marta Bellotti. He probably received his training from an experienced architect. His works show a good knowledge of the architecture of Lombardy and Piedmont .

In March 1723 he emigrated from Castello to Poland . Protected by the architect Józef Fontana , a protagonist of the community of Italian artists in Poland, Fontana worked in 1726 as an architect for the court marshal Paweł Karol Sanguszko and for the widow Barbara Duninów Sanguszko. In 1730 he married the Polish noble Marianna Suffczyńska and had four children with her. After the two sons John (priest) and Joseph returned to Castello, they administered the paternal inheritance there (the Fondiera ). During his stay in Lithuania , Fontana stayed in Castello with his mother, sisters and in-laws, mainly because of the administration of his property and because of the desire to return to Castello.

Between 1737 and 1745 he carried out several building orders from important noble families and nobles in Lubartów , as well as several orders for religious orders. He built the Church of St. Anne, the Church of the Capuchins , the Uniate Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin, and the Church of the Reformed Franciscan Order in Chełm . In 1749 he married Teresa Romaironi, the daughter of a patrician from Warsaw, and moved to Isjaslav, where he also worked as an architect.
