Józef Fontana

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Józef Fontana (Italian name: Giacomo Giuseppe Fontana , also referred to as Józef II. Fontana , born June 21, 1676 in Mendrisio , Switzerland , † 1739 in Warsaw ) was a Polish architect who is considered a representative of the classifying Baroque . He was the father of the architects Giacomo Fontana and Jan Kanty Fontana. His son-in-law was Johann Georg Plersch .

Life

The living conditions of Fontana are controversial, according to the Saur General Artists Dictionary he is said to have left Wilno in 1743 after he was unable to assert himself against Johann Christoph Glaubitz in the design for a church building . Giuseppe Fontana was born in Mendrisio on June 21, 1676. His father Giacomo came from Novazzano , in today's Canton of Ticino , his mother Orsola Ceroni from Valsolda, Italy . Probably he came at the end of the reign of John III. Sobieskis to Poland. His name is mentioned in 1707 in connection with the construction of the Piarist monastery and church in Szczuczyn . Presumably his two uncles Ceroni - Italian architects who lived and worked in Poland - encouraged him to move. His patron in Poland was among others the Vice Chancellor Stanisław Antoni Szczuka. Fontana trained his sons. Together with Jakub, he designed the towers of the Piarist Church in Łowicz . Father and son also worked together at the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw. After his death, his business passed to Jakub.

The correspondence between Fontana and Elżbieta Helena, the Crown Hetman Adam Mikołaj Sieniawski, from 1717 to 1726 has been preserved.
