Valsolda is an Italian municipality in the province of Como in Lombardy with 1499 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

geography

Valsolda is located on the north shore of Lake Lugano and covers an area of ​​31.74  km² . The community has no actual center, but consists of a number of fractions (districts). Some of these are on the shores of Lake Lugano: ( Cressogno , San Mamete (main town), Albogasio , Oria and Santa Margherita - on the opposite bank, south of the lake), others on the mountain slopes ( Loggio , Drano , Puria , Dasio and Castello ). The neighboring municipalities are: Cadro (CH), Cimadera (CH), Claino con Osteno , Alta Valle Intelvi , Lugano (CH), Porlezza , Sonvico (CH) and Val Rezzo .

Valsolda is on the state road 340. From the Swiss border to the town of Cressogno, a newly built tunnel runs under the Valsolda valley (seven kilometers of the Statale Regina 340). After more than 25 years of construction and repeated relocations, the tunnel was opened in October 2012.

  • Sanctuary of the Madonna della Caravina in the fraction of Cressogno . The first church, probably between 1632 and 1639, was converted into the presbytery of a new and larger building. The new structure was designed by the architect Carlo Buzzi and executed by the builder Battista Paracca. The church was completed in 1643 and later adorned with stucco work by Giovanni Prandi von Porlezza. From 1648 Isidoro Bianchi and his nephew Girolamo painted the presbytery and the side chapels. The fresco of the miracle on the high altar has been preserved from the original church.
