Gera Lario is a municipality with 1035 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Como in Lombardy in Italy .

Gera Lario is located on the north shore of Lake Como at the mouth of the Gera stream at the foot of the Montemezzo mountain .

history

Gera Lario is an old fishing village that was founded in Roman times . The place was important at that time because it was on the Roman road Via Regina , which connected Como with the Val Chiavenna and Raetia . In addition to fishing, Gera Lario also farmed and raised silk spiders . The name of the village probably comes from the ancient Greek word leréus for priest . The place was a base for the Spanish troops during the clashes with the Grisons from the Valtellina . In 1482 Gera Lario received ecclesiastical autonomy. A flood on August 8, 1951 killed 17 community citizens and severely damaged the pilgrimage church of Nostra Signora di Fatima , built in 1634 .
