Magreglio is an Italian municipality with 652 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Como , Lombardy .

geography

The place is above Lake Como , west of its southern arm. The neighboring municipalities are Barni , Bellagio , Oliveto Lario and Sormano . The municipality belongs to the mountain commune Comunità Montana Triangolo Lariano .

Attractions

  • Sanctuary of Madonna del Ghisallo. The current building dates from 1623 and contains an image of Mary venerated as Madonna del Latte . The Madonna del Ghisallo has been venerated as the patron saint of racing cyclists since 1949 . The Museo del Ciclismo Madonna del Ghisallo , which opened in 2006, is dedicated to cycling. Magreglio was a frequent destination of the Giro d'Italia and the Giro di Lombardia , mostly coming from Bellagio .

Personalities

The German poet Albert H. Rausch , born in Friedberg , also known under his pseudonym Henry Benrath, lived here during the Second World War until his death in 1949. Through his intervention, he saved the village from the German invaders.
