history

It is believed that the name Albiolo derives from the Latin "alveole", for which there are several unconfirmed explanations. Albiolo could have been a military outpost of Como in Roman times . From the end of the 14th century to the Napoleonic period, Albiolo belonged to the Duchy of Milan , then to the Kingdom of Lombardy-Veneto and finally to the Kingdom of Italy (1861–1946) .

Culture and sights

  • The parish church of the Annunciation was rebuilt in 1625. The altarpiece from 1579 has been preserved. The organ comes from the organ building company Mascioni (Opus 467, 1934).
  • The 12th century Romanesque church of San Martino. The campanile was built in the 17th century. Today the church is consecrated to Saint Anne after a pledge made during the plague of 1630 . It is one of the oldest architectural monuments in Albiolo. The frescos of the Lombard school from the 14th and 15th centuries are well preserved.
  • Castello Odescalchi (13th century), behind the parish church. In the 17th century it belonged to Benedetto Odescalchi, later Pope Innocent XI.
