Bellagio (also Bellaggio ) is a municipality with 3694 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) on Lake Como in Italy . The place belongs to the province of Como in Lombardy . On January 21, 2014, Bellagio merged with the Civenna Municipality . The newly formed community kept the name Bellagio.

geography

The place is known for its picturesque location overlooking the Alps at the tip of the peninsula that separates the two southern arms of the lake. Como , Lecco and Bellagio form the cornerstones of the Triangolo Lariano . Neighboring municipalities are Griante , Lezzeno , Magreglio , Oliveto Lario , Sormano , Tremezzina , Varenna , Veleso and Zelbio .

Attractions

  • In the local Villa Serbelloni has Bellagio Center of the Rockefeller Foundation established. The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is situated on the waterfront at Lake Como.
  • The Hotel Britannia has been empty for years and is deteriorating more and more into a ruin.

If you want to visit the place from Lugano or Porlezza , you usually use the car ferry that goes from Menaggio and Cadenabbia on the west bank and also serves Varenna on the opposite east bank. Alternatively, you can also use the lakeside roads via Como or Lecco , but this is a detour of over 60 kilometers. The place can also be reached from Erba on a winding mountain road.

Bellagio was the source of inspiration for the Hotel Bellagio in Las Vegas .

Personalities

For centuries, the place has been a magnet for celebrities due to its picturesque location. Visits by John F. Kennedy , Charlie Chaplin and Konrad Adenauer are documented . Also Pliny the Younger estimated the site. A street and the paddle steamer “Plinio” are named after him, which was taken out of service in 1963 but is to be restored by the “Amici del Plinio” committee. In addition, Cosima Wagner was born in Bellagio in 1837 , the daughter of Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner's second wife . Teresio Olivelli (born January 7, 1916 - January 17, 1945 in Hersbruck ), a lecturer and partisan, gold medal for military bravery , was born here (plaque on the house where he was born).
