history

Bundoran has retained the character of a seaside resort to this day. The first mention of Bundoran goes back to the year 1777, when William Cole, 1st Viscount Enniskillen built his summer residence Bundoran Lodge there. More and more his wealthy contemporaries followed him as visitors, who discovered Bundoran for the beach and the sea air.

Up until the middle of the 19th century, today's Bundoran consisted of two separate villages. Bundoran was the village west of the bridge over the River Bradog, now known as the West End . To the east of the bridge, about two kilometers away, was the village of Single Street . Between these two separate parishes was the townland of Drumacrin . This area is now part of the present city center. It was only after the station opened under the name Bundoran in 1866 that the two individual communities continued to develop and grew together to form today's Bundoran. The majority of the local population lived in Single Street , while across the bridge, in what is now the West End , mainly the wealthy newcomers resided.

With the increase in the trend to travel, especially by rail, the popularity of Bundoran jumped the class barriers and more and more Irish from the east coast discovered the charm of the place and also returned here year after year, so that Bundoran finally at the end of the 19th century was one of the most popular seaside resorts or seaside resorts in Ireland and hotels and guest houses opened in large numbers all over the city. Before the “Irish economic miracle” began at the end of the 1980s, a drive along the road along the coast still exuded the charm of this era.

A devastating hotel fire in the heart of the city in August 1980 killed ten people, locals and tourists.

Bundoran is a member of Douzelage , a European city federation, to which one city from one country of the European Union belongs.
