Siret ( German  Sereth , Polish Seret ) is a small town in the district of Suceava in the Romanian south Bukowina . It is located on the river of the same name , which flows here from the Ukraine to Romanian territory.

history

The city was first mentioned in a document on July 24, 1340, making it the earliest documented location in the historical Vltava region . In the Middle Ages , the city was of greater administrative importance in the Principality of Moldova . As part of northern Moldau, Sereth became part of Austria in 1774 , later part of the crown land of Bukovina .

The term " Sereter Hasidim " for a group of Charedim within ultra-orthodox Judaism goes back to a movement that arose in and around the city between 1870 and 1940.

Today Sereth as a border town to Ukraine is important as a customs and border crossing station for road traffic.

Twin cities

Siret has been a member of the European city association Douzelage since 2010 .
