Districts of Romania

Romania is divided into 41 districts ( Romanian județ , plural județe , followed by the article județul 'The Circle') and the city of Bucharest .

The administrative structure in Județe was made in the 19th century on the model of the French departments. The communist government changed it to the Soviet model, but reverted to the current system in 1968. In 1981 the districts of Ilfov and Ialomia were reorganized into the districts of Giurgiu, Călărași, Ialomița and Ilfov. Until 1997 Ilfov was not an independent circle, but dependent on Bucharest.
