Cityscape
Călărași is a typical southern Romanian industrial city with a heavily " systematized " - that is, under Ceaușescu, partially demolished and completely rebuilt - city center. The city is a mixture of huge, often fallow industrial areas (steel combine SIDERCA), rural outskirts and large prefabricated building districts. There are only a few buildings worth seeing in the city center: the prefecture and the town hall, some old churches and a modern socialist, but architecturally interesting palace of culture. A plus point is the scenic location of the city on Brațul Borcea, lined with dense riparian forests, a tributary of the Danube with beautiful beaches, a zoo and a botanical garden.
