Călărași (1944–1989 Cyrillic Кэлэрашь , Russian Kalarasch / Калараш ) is a city in the Republic of Moldova and the capital of the Călărași Rajon of the same name . As of January 1, 2003, the population was estimated at 16,800.

history

According to a legend , the name came about when a Moldovan ruler and his soldiers stopped on the banks of the Bîc River . The riders, captivated by the beautiful nature of the dense forests, descended and decided to stay there forever. These horsemen were then called călărași .

In August 1940, the town of Calarasi received the town charter , and three months later in November 1940, she was the district center. During the Second World War the city was almost destroyed. After that the city was rebuilt.

Town twinning

There has been a twinning between the German city of Bühl and Călărași since 1990 . Since 2000 there has been a connection with Schkeuditz without formal consolidation .
