The Călărași Raion is a raion in the Republic of Moldova . The capital of the Rajons is Călărași .
geography
The Rajon is located in the center of the country. The neighboring districts are Nisporeni , Orhei , Strășeni , Telenești and Ungheni .
The area of the Rajons is 753.54 km² .
history
The Călărași Rajon has existed since 2003. Until February 2003, the area belonged to the now dissolved Ungheni District (Județul Ungheni) together with the present-day Nisporeni and Ungheni Rajons.
population
Population development
1959 lived in the area of today's Rajons 75,030 inhabitants. By 1970 the population had increased to 92,023. Contrary to the national development, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously in the following three censuses: from 89,401 in 1979 to 85,000 in 1989 up to 75,075 in 2004. In 2014, according to the census, 64,401 inhabitants lived in Călărași district.
79.6% of the population of Călărași lives in the countryside. This value has not changed noticeably since 2005.
The population density is 104.97 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Ethnic groups
According to the 2004 census, the Moldovans make up by far the largest ethnic group with 92.2%, while 75.8% of the nationwide described themselves as Moldovans. Smaller minorities in the Călărași Rajon are the Ukrainians with 3.7%, the Romanians with 2.0% and the Russians with 1.3% and the Gagauz and Bulgarians with 0.1% each.
