The Cantemir District is a Raion in the Republic of Moldova . The capital of the Rajons is Cantemir .

geography

The Rajon is located in the southwest of the country on the border with Romania along the Prut River . It borders on the Leova Raion to the north, the Gagauz Autonomous Region to the east and the Cahul Raion to the south .

history

Cantemir Rajon has existed since 2003. Until February 2003, the area belonged to the now dissolved Cahul District (Județul Cahul) together with today's Cahul and Taraclia Rajons .

population

Population development

1959 lived in the area of ​​today's Rajons 46,758 inhabitants. In the decades that followed, the number of inhabitants increased steadily: from 56,466 in 1970 to 58,169 in 1979 to 62,864 in 1989. By 2004, as in the whole of Moldova, the population of the Rajon fell, which was 60,001 in that year. In 2014 it was 52,115.

Ethnic groups

According to the 2004 census, Moldovans make up the largest ethnic group in Cantemir Raion with 88.3%, followed by Bulgarians with 6.2%. Smaller minorities are the Ukrainians with 1.6%, the Romanians with 1.5%, the Russians with 1.2% and the Gagauz with 0.9%.
