The ungheni district is a Raion in the Republic of Moldova . The capital of the Rajons is Ungheni .
geography
The Rajon is located in the west of the country on the border with Romania , which runs along the Prut River . In the Rajon is the 430 m high Dealul Bălăneşti, the highest point in Moldova.
In addition to the capital, the Ungheni district consists of the city of Corneşti and the municipalities of Agronomovca, Alexeevca, Boghenii Noi, Buciumeni, Bumbăta, Buşila, Cetireni, Chirileni, Cioropcani, Condrăteşti, s.Corneşti, Cornova, Costuleni, Florițoa, îrechătişti Măgurele, Mănoileşti, Morenii Noi, Năpădeni, Negurenii Vechi, Petreşti, Pîrlița, Rădenii Vechi, Sculeni , Sineşti, Teşcureni, Todireşti, Unțeşti, Valea Mare and Zagarancea.

history
The Ungheni Rajon has existed since 2003. Until February 2003, the area belonged to the now dissolved Ungheni County (Județul Ungheni) together with the present-day Călărași and Nisporeni Rajons.
population
Population development
In 1959, 86,741 people lived in what is now the Rajons. In the decades that followed, the number of inhabitants rose steadily: from 104,545 in 1970 to 110,264 in 1979 to 117,364 in 1989. By 2004, as in the whole of Moldova, the population of the Rajon fell, which was 110,545 in that year. In 2014 it was 101,064.
Ethnic groups
According to the 2004 census, the Moldovans represent the largest ethnic group in Ungheni Raion with 88.5%, followed by the Ukrainians with 7.0%, the Russians with 2.5% and the Romanians with 1.5%. Smaller minorities are the Gagauz and Bulgarians with 0.1% each.
