The drochia district is a Raion in the north of Moldova . Its main town is Drochia .

geography

The Rajon, which has existed since 2003, is located in a flat hilly lowland in the north of the country. The neighboring districts are Donduşeni , Floreşti , Rîşcani , Sîngerei and Soroca .

The district capital Drochia had 13,150 inhabitants at the 2014 census. Other larger municipalities are Pelinia with 7,394 inhabitants, Chetosu with 4,777 inhabitants, Țarigrad with 3,977 inhabitants, Cotova with 2,954 inhabitants, Nicoreni with 2,832 inhabitants, Ochiul Alb with 2,636 inhabitants and Zgurița with 2,065 inhabitants .

In 1959 there were 84,974 inhabitants in the area of ​​today's Rajons. In the following decades the number of inhabitants increased steadily: from 93,724 in 1970 to 94,915 in 1979 to 96,953 in 1989. By 2004, as in the whole of Moldova, the population of the Rajon fell, which was 87,092 in that year. In 2014 it was 74,443.

According to the 2004 census, Moldovans make up the largest ethnic group in Drochia Raion with 85.4%, followed by Ukrainians with 11.3%. Smaller minorities are the Russians with 1.9%, the Romanians with 0.8% and the Gagauz with 0.1%.
