The Briceni Raion is a raion in the Republic of Moldova . The capital of the Rajons is Briceni .
geography
The Briceni Rajon is located in the far northwest of the country on the border with Ukraine and Romania . The Prut flows along the border with Romania . The neighboring districts within Moldova are Edineț Raion and Ocnița Raion .
history
Briceni Rajon has existed since 2003. Until February 2003, the area belonged to the now dissolved Edineț (Județul Edineț) district.
population
Population development
In 1959 there were 77,846 inhabitants in the area of today's Rajons. In the following decades the number of inhabitants increased steadily: from 81,403 in 1970 to 82,395 in 1979 and up to 85,395 in 1989. By 2004, as in the whole of Moldova, the population of the Rajon fell, which that year fell below the value of 1970 fell and was only 78,027. In 2014 it was 70,029.
Ethnic groups
According to the 2004 census, the Moldovans make up the largest ethnic group in Briceni Raion with 70.6%, followed by the Ukrainians with 25.6%, which is significantly higher than the national proportion of 8.4%. Smaller minorities are the Russians with 2.6% and the Romanians with 0.4% and the Gagauz and Bulgarians with 0.1% each.
