The Rîșcani Raion is a raion in the Republic of Moldova . The capital of the Rajons is Rîșcani .

geography

The Rajon is located in the northwest of the country on the border with Romania along the Prut River . Rîșcani borders on the Rajons Dondușeni , Drochia , Edineț , Fălești , Glodeni and Sîngerei as well as on the municipality of Bălți .

In addition to the capital, Costeşti has town charter , the remaining area of ​​the Rajons is distributed among rural communities.

population

Population development

In 1959 there were 68,040 inhabitants in what is now the Rajons. In the following twenty years the population increased and was 73,981 in 1970 and 76,847 in 1979. While the number of inhabitants rose nationwide until the 1989 census, it fell slightly in Rîşcani Raion to 75,527. Following the national trend, the population of the Rajon fell to 69,454 by 2004. In 2014 it was 59,226.

Ethnic groups

According to the 2004 census, the Moldovans represent the largest ethnic group in Rîșcani Rajon with 72.6%, followed by the Ukrainians with 22.5%, whose share is well above the national figure of 8.4%. Smaller minorities in the district are the Russians with 2.5%, the Romanians with 1.1% and the Gagauz and Bulgarians with 0.1% each.

Transport and infrastructure

Bălți-Leadoveni Airport, the second largest airport in the country, is located in Rîșcani Rajon .
