Rîșcani ( Russian Рышкановка / Ryschkanowka ) is a district in the north of the Moldovan capital Chișinău . At the 2004 census it had 132,740 inhabitants.

history

From the first half of the 15th century, the area in which today's Rîșcani was to emerge belonged to the scribe Michail Otsel and his descendants. In 1717 the treasurer Eremiya Visternikul acquired half of the land that was to bear his name: Visternicheny. The rest of the area was divided between several landowners. In 1772, the southeastern Visternicheny moved into the possession of Konstantin Ryshkanu, after whom today's district is named.

The church of Saints Constantine and Helena, built in 1777, has been preserved on a hill near the river Bîc . At the foot of the hill on which the church stands, Bulgarian militiamen were trained in 1877 , who then took part in the Russo-Ottoman War of 1877/1878 . A chapel was built on the parade square, which was later converted into a memorial for the Bulgarian militia. There has also been an obelisk there since 1966 .

In the middle of the 19th century, the growing city of Chișinău moved closer to Rîșcani. In Rîșcani itself there were 122 houses and 512 inhabitants in 1870. The former suburb has been within the city limits of Chișinău since the end of the 19th century. At the turn of the century, small industrial companies settled there, but Rîșcani remained a place characterized by narrow streets and low buildings with thatched roofs until the end of the Second World War .

The construction of four- to five-story residential buildings only began here in late summer 1950. The first nine-story buildings were built in the early 1970s. A hospital was also built.
