Buiucani ( Russian Боюканы Bojukany ) is a district of the Moldovan capital Chișinău . At the 2004 census it had 107,744 inhabitants.

The district is located in the northwest of the city. It takes its name from a formerly independent village in the area.

history

The first written mention of the village of Buiucani dates back to the second half of the 15th century. Until the beginning of the 17th century, Buiucani was in the possession of several small landowners, referred to as răzeși in the Principality of Moldova , and then came into the possession of the boyar D. Paleologa. In 1608 the Gospodar Konstantin Movile Buiucani assigned the heirs to Hodora and Paraski. A pond and a mill on the river Bîc were mentioned at that time. In 1610 the village had several owners again. In the 1620s Buiucani came into the possession of a monastery in Iași . The local population was mainly active in agriculture, but there were also blacksmiths, carpenters and other handicraft businesses. In 1774 there were 52 houses in the local area.

At the beginning of the 1830s, Chișinău grew to the limits of the village. After the Second World War , building activity began, and multi-storey residential buildings have been built since the 1950s.

In 1950 the Botanical Garden of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences was laid out. The district area also has a college of education, several parks, the Jewish cemetery and foreign embassies.
