The Soroca Raion is a raion in the Republic of Moldova . The capital of the Rajons is Soroca .

geography

The Rajon is located in the northeast of the country on the border with Ukraine along the Dniester River . Its neighboring districts are Drochia , Donduşeni and Floreşti .

history

The Soroca Rajon has existed since 2003. Until February 2003, the area belonged to the larger and now dissolved Soroca District (Județul Soroca).

population

Population development

In 1959 89,174 inhabitants lived in the area of ​​today's Rajons. In the following decades the number of inhabitants increased steadily: from 100,938 in 1970 to 106,062 in 1979 to 107,834 in 1989. By 2004, as in the whole of Moldova, the population of the Rajon fell, which was 94,986 in that year. In 2014 it was 77,656 and thus below the level of 1959.

Ethnic groups

According to the 2004 census, Moldovans represent the largest ethnic group in Soroca Raion with 89.2%, followed by Ukrainians with 5.0%. Smaller minorities in the Rajon are the Russians with 2.7%, the Romanians with 1.0% and the Gagauz and Bulgarians with 0.1% each.

Soroca fortress

Culture and sights

The Soroca fortress in the capital was built under the voivode Ștefan cel Mare in the 15th century on the site of a Genoese fortress . In an apple-growing area near the village of Rudi, the last survey point of the Struve Arch, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located on Moldovan territory .
