The Cahul Raion is a raion in the Republic of Moldova . The capital of the Rajons is Cahul .
geography
The Rajon is located in the extreme southwest of the country. In the west, the state border with Romania runs along the Prut River . Giurgiulești, the southernmost city of Moldova, is located near its confluence with the Danube and is also the only access to the Danube with a port accessible to seagoing vessels . Lake Beleu is the largest non-artificial lake in the country. In the southeast there is a narrow section of the border between the Rajons and Ukraine . In the north, the district of Cahul is bordered by the district of Cantemir and in the west by the district of Taraclia and the Autonomous Region of Gagauzia .
history
The Rajon Cahul exists since 2003. Until February 2003 the area belonged together with the today's Rajons Cantemir and Taraclia to the now dissolved district Cahul (Județul Cahul).
population
Population development
1959 lived in the area of today's Rajons 78,142 inhabitants. In the following decades the number of inhabitants increased steadily: from 100,978 in 1970 to 114,381 in 1979 to 122,008 in 1989. By 2004, as in the whole of Moldova, the population of the Rajon fell, which was 119,231 in that year. In 2014 it had fallen to 105,324.
Ethnic groups
According to the 2004 census, the Moldovans make up the proportionately largest ethnic group in Cahul Raion with 76.3%, followed by the Ukrainians with 6.6%, the Russians with 6.5%, the Bulgarians with 4.9% and the Gagauz with 3 , 1% and the Romanians with 1.8%. The main settlement area of the Ukrainian ethnic group is in the east of the Rajon on the border with the Taraclia Rajon. The Russians live mainly in the area around the capital.
