Lake Beleu is a lake in Cahul Raion in the southwest of Moldova .
Lake Beleu is the largest natural lake in the country. It is located south of the city of Cahul and north of the village Giurgiuleşti on the left bank of the Prut and, according to the official Moldovan statistics, extends over an area of 6.26 km² , but its size can vary between 5 and 9.5 km² depending on the amount of rainfall. The reservoirs along the Prut, above whose confluence with the Danube , the lake is located, also have a negative effect on the height of its water level . Lake Beleu has an average water depth of 0.5 to 1.5 meters, the maximum depth is 2.5 meters. In 1992 it was almost completely dry. The lake was formed about 5000 to 6000 years ago when a large part of today's Danube Delta was still covered by the Black Sea .
Lake Beleu is part of the 16.91 km² nature reserve Prutul de Jos ("Lower Pruth") created in 1991 . Since the adoption of the Ramsar Convention by Moldova, the wetland around the lake has been recognized as a wetland of international importance. The most common fish species in the brackish water of the lake are carp , bleak , perch , bitterlings and pikeperch .
